The Return Of The Horror

The ominous countdown that adorned The Horrors homepage ended Monday night, and it was a countdown to remember. Being a mailing list member I received the surprise a few hours before the rest of the world and boy what a surprise it was.

The Horrors are back with ‘Sea Within a Sea’. An eight minute masterpiece, that sounds almost nothing like anything from their Debut: ‘Strange House’. Talk about a change in direction. It feels ethereal, it feels sublime, yet it feels oh so right. Faris’ soft vocals (YES soft vocals) layered over the beautifully crafted music akin to Neu make for a song like nothing they have ever done before. With the release of their cover of Suicide’s ‘Shadazz’ last year merely hinting, that they may indeed be moving away from the angry Goth roots they were born from, ‘Sea Within Sea’ merely confirms this.

It is set to be the closing track of the new album; ‘Primary Colours’ (Out 4th May), according to a recent NME article and it feels like the perfect piece of music to end an album on. This may not convert the haters, and whilst it may not bring them in to the mainstream, it will surely turn some heads. This could well and truly be the year of the Horrors…

Some say we walk alone
Barefoot on wicked stone, no light
and sanctuary found never waits around awhile
